Tutorial: Scalloped Hem Skirt

After the positive reaction I received on yesterday's post, I couldn't help but put a tutorial together. Make sure the skirt you are starting with is 2"-3" longer than you want the finished length to be.

1. Pick out the hem on your skirt and iron it flat.
2. Leave the skirt right side out. Fold 2"-3" of fabric out and pin it in place.
3. Using a round template (I used a cup with a 3" diameter) and a marking pen, draw your scallop pattern.
4. Carefully follow your template with the sewing machine.
5. Trim excess fabric, making sure to cut as high as possible between each scallop.
6. Flip the scallops in and press with high heat and steam.

  2. Super cute!!
I would leave an extra inch or so of fabric inside above the scallops, to act as sort of a facing/anchor--might make them less heavy in comparison to the body, and less likely to flip around.

The tutorial is so cute!! How did you get those great drawings?

    1. Thanks for the tip!

I drew the skirt pieces using AutoCAD (an architectural software I use for work), and added the text, arrows, and tool drawings in photoshop. It was a lot of work, but I am really happy with how it turned out.

  4. Sooo cute! This is a great tutorial and I'm inspired. If you can use autocad, I bet you could learn Adobe Illustrator. I think it would make the process faster when drawing this out. But I'm kind of in love with Illustrator, so that's just my thought. Thank you for this!

    1. I think it can be done with most fabrics, but some are easier than others. This particular skirt is good old-fashioned polyester, which worked amazingly. I have also done it with a knit tee and it worked but was a bit trickier to sew. Some fabrics may require the hem to be tacked down to keep it from flipping.

  13. I love your posts and tried the pattern where you cut two shirts in half and sewed the pieces together to make two color block shirts. The skirt is so cute and a really want to make it but I don't understand instruction 2. Do you have to turn the hem onto the other side (like inside out) and draw the pattern on it like that? Or do you leave the whole skirt right side out and draw the scallops on the outside of the skirt and follow the scallops with the sewing machine?
