Check it Out

I was out a bit late last night, enjoying the company of a group of wonderful friends. So, today I have just a few tidbits.

{Image from YHO}

First, I have read about the Designer Consigner going on here in SLC several places (including YHO).

You can read about the details here, check out the list of brands here. Go through your closet, and take your pieces to the Spa Vitoria (5445 S. Highland Drive) on September 1. If you actually have designer clothes to consign (lucky you), you should definately check it out!

Designer Consigner Sale

Clothing drop-off September 1, 5 - 8 p.m.

Also, I just found a very new blog that I am totally digging called mary's wishlist, and I think it's worth checking out. Mary's sense of style and sense of blog (yes, I said that) is totally up my alley, and since I am digging it so much, I bet you will too.

Do you have anything you want everyone to check out? For me to check out? Leave a comment, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading, and as always,

Uptown Cheapskate

In last week's Weekend Roundup, I mentioned the Grand Opening of a new down town consignment store, Uptown Cheapskate. I could write a lengthy love letter to the concept of consignment and how it has forever changed the way I shop.

I made my way over there on Friday afternoon and perused the store. I was impressed with both how well organized the store was (by item type, size, and then color) and well it was stocked (and of course with the prices). As it seems I always am, I was in a rush, and only had about 20 minutes to look, yet I still was able to find some (hardly used) very cute yellow flats for just $7.

According to their website:

"Uptown Cheapskate is more than a fashion exchange concept. It is an attitude, a personality, and an art form. Uptown Cheapskate empowers individuals to express themselves using brand name fashions and modern style without the typical price tag. The concept is simple really: we buy and sell your favorite brands at prices that everyone can get excited about. We’re not trying to change the world; just offer an exciting new way to shop it."

I give Uptown Cheapskate a whole hearted thumbs up. It is conveniently located half of block from the Gateway. According to reader Hannahtess, Uptown Cheapskate has parking spaces in the AMPCO parking lot behind the store and offers free 1 hour parking, so don't waste your money at the meter!

Plato's Closet

Some of you may remember my mentioning Plato's Closet last week. They were having a grab bag sale on Saturday. I moseyed in 4 hours after the sale started (not really expecting to get a lot out of it.... more to conduct some research for the blog). The clearance racks that had items that could be grab bagged had been completely ravaged, and the place was chock full of people. Even so, I managed to find a pair of snake skin flats (I might be a little obsessed with animal print flats) for $9 (and they weren't even used!) and a chunky necklace for $3. Even with the chaos of the sale, it was clear that the place is stocked with good stuff at even better prices. I was especially impressed with their accessory selection and pricing.

There are so many great things about consignment stores. My favorite is that they have a huge selection of trendy, designer styles as well as those every day basics you can't live without — all at up to 70% off retail prices. Another thing is they help you solve two problems: is your closet empty...or too full? If it's empty, buy clothes for cheap; if it's full, sell what you have for cash. I must admit, I am not a prime candidate for selling my clothes to consignment because I keep things until there is no possible way I (or anyone else for that matter) would ever want to wear them again. But, if you have things that are still in fashion, but just don't make the daily cut, take them in!

No appointment necessary - they buy clothes and accessories every day and will pay you cash on the spot for the items they can sell. Call about their buying standards.

They have 4 Utah locations:

To find a location anywhere else, go here.

This store is not on my way to anything, but I will start making trips specifically to go here. They also seem to have substantial sales pretty often, and I will do my best to keep you all posted on those!

Did anyone else make it to the sale? If you have a tip or comment on consignment shopping, leave a comment!

Weekend Round-Up

I have a few sales to mention before the weekend. First, remember the super warehouse sale going on at Shade Clothing this weekend. Read about the details at my earlier post and at the YHO post here.

Next, I read about an amazing sale going on at Plato's Closet at one of the Salt Lake Tribune's blogs, One Cheap Chick. "Resale clothing company Plato's Closet will be having a once-a-year sale on Feb. 7 that's sure to attract scores of bargain hunters along the Wasatch Front. For one day, customers at most of the chain's stores pay just $10 for all the clearance items they can stuff in one shopping bag. The chain, which focuses on teen fashion, has four Utah locations. Check with the one nearest you for details about their sale and their operating hours. If you go, plan to go right when the store opens that day (a little before it opens would be ideal) because within an hour or two there will be little, if any, clearance items left. This is a very popular sale and will probably be even more popular this year given the bad economy."

I have never gone to this store, but have been curious for awhile...

Has anyone been to Plato's Closet? Experienced this yearly sale? Leave a comment!

Thanks for looking, and as always,

Happy Shopping!

PS- I am going to do my own small series Stuff under Twenty today. Check back for posts later on!

Pib's Exchange

One of my very favorite stores around town is Pib's Exchange (see map) in Sugarhouse. It's a consignment (and sometimes costume) store. Don't be put off by anything when you first go in. Peruse the racks for a few minutes as you get a feel for the place. The items here range from punky t-shirts to vintage dresses to up-scale jeans, and there are always fabulous shoes in between.

The treasures here are totally worth digging for. I ALWAYS leave with something I have fallen in love with. At least 50% of the time I get a compliment on something I am wearing, it's from Pib's, and it was less than $15.

(At Pib's, I have found an Anthropologie cardigan (for $10), cute red flats (for $7), and a great Banana Republic skirt for ($13). Items shown are similar.)

Pib's is also a buy sell and trade store, which means - you can bring in your old clothes and walk away with new ones. (It's actually a little more difficult than that. They buy depending on season, age, brand, condition, style, size, and supply & demand). According to their MySpace, if they are able to take your clothes they will give you 30% in cash of what they can sell them for or 55% in store credit to get other clothes. So, bring in your clothes and see what you can get.
