We are Moving to Corpus Christi!

It's official, ladies. My little family is moving to Corpus Christi, Texas. My husband was accepted to graduate school at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. We are so excited and slightly terrified to move cross country with our new little baby. It is definitely going to be an adventure to move to a part of the country that I have never been to.

So, I have to ask, what do you all know about Corpus Christi? What areas do you recommend to live? What are some things we should make sure to do when we get there? Any advice would make me a very grateful lady.

  2. Just like any city, there are areas of town you'll want to avoid, but overall CC is wonderful! I'm sure it's too early to start thinking of day trips, but I have family in Rockport, about 30 minutes from Corpus, and it's one of my favorite places in the world.

  3. I live in Houston, but have been to CC many times for road trips or to visit family. I wish I had more to say about it, but i will say that Texas is a wonderful state and very friendly. I'm a former student of A&M College Station, so I'm also biased on that front :). I'm confident you'll settle in and love your new adventure gulf style :)

  5. You should read "Made for You and Me: Going West, Going Broke, Finding Home" it's a story about picking up and moving across the country, baby included, during the recession. :)

  6. Cool! I grew up near Houston, and I've been to Corpus a couple of times. It's a fun place to visit. Being near the coast and beaches is going to be a lot different than Utah! Enjoy!

  9. Congrats!! And Howdy. :) I'm also a Texas A&M-College Station grad and live up the road a ways (4.5 hours actually) in Austin. I've never lived there, but we try to get down to Port Aransas (right next to Corpus) every year.
Best advice I can think of is:
1 - Don't expect a beach like you'd find on the east or west coats - this is the gulf. It's not as pretty and there's not really much in the way of surf, but it's still the beach! And hey, there's kayaking in the intercoastal, etc.
2 - Texas is, occasionally, like a whole 'nother country. I've watched my husband and my SIL acclimate as they moved from CT and PA and it's entertaining. Expect some cultural differences.
    and
3 - Learn just a little bit of Spanish. It will help. Also, you will be given the opportunity to order tamales from someone at Christmas time. You are morally obligated to do so and you will be very very happy you did. It may actually justify the entire move for you.

  10. Congrats! That's exciting for you and your family. Like the girl above said, Texas is like a whole other country so it might take time to adjust. Good luck with the move!

  12. Born and raised in Houston--you'll miss the mountains but love the people. And yes, the Texas pride can sometimes get a little ridiculous, but trust me. The sooner you embrace it, the better :) Congrats and good luck!!

  14. Hello! I stumbled across your blog through Apartment Therapy! I'm not sure if you're still in the CC area (seeing as this post is from over a year ago), but I'm a Texas native and have been living in Corpus Christi for about 7 years now. Honestly, Corpus doesn't have a whole lot to offer, but there are some hidden gems. My family and I would like to move one day, but seeing as right now my husband's business is local only, and I'm still in grad school, Corpus is home.

Restaurants: Hester's, Small Planet, Executive Surf Club, Senior Jaime's, Drunk'N Noodlez, Thai Cottage, and I've heard good things about Nuevo Cafe although I haven't tried it myself (yet!).

Shopping: Antique Alley and Lamar Park are the only areas I can recommend, aside from the various thrift shops around.

Good luck! And if you ever have any other questions about the area, please feel free to ask me!
