Style File: Kelli {Family Photo Shoot}

I got an email from a good friend from High School asking for some family photo styling help. She was looking for outfit ideas for she, her husband, and her sweet little daughter. They will be grouped with her side of the family who are all wearing denim and either red or brown tops. This is what I came up with:

V-Neck Cardigan - $20.00 (Orig. $24.50)
Sleeveless Ruffled Top $14.50 (Orig. $22.50)
Flannel Shirt - $29.50
Ruffled Babydoll Top $10.50

I made all my selections from Old Navy, as she only has 3 days to find things, and I think ON is the most reasonably priced apparel store for the whole family. I also made sure to vary the patterns and shades of red and brown to keep the shot from looking flat.

Would you wear this combo for a family photo? Any tips you want to share for dressing for big group family pictures? Leave your thoughts below.

Hanes Sheer Tights Review + Giveaway

***Giveaway Closed***

Tights have become all the rage. Last winter, I wore them nearly constantly. They look great, keep you warm, and hide the evidence of your (or my) general shaving laziness.

I was super stoked when Hanes offered to send me a selection of tights this fall. I received black, granite, and plum, and they are all awesome. They are a great combination of opaque and sheer. They have a wide, comfortable waist band and a very effective control top (which I am more grateful for now than ever).

I am trying to smize, can you tell?

{vintage fabric top - elsa bags - $32, skirt c/o eshatki, black sheer tights c/o hanes, steve madden boots - via TJ Maxx - $49}

And now I get to do one of my favorite things, offer all of you a giveaway! Hanes has kindly offered to give the winning reader a collection of Hanes Silk Reflections Sheer Tights - one pair in each color (black, gentle brown, granite, nude and plum) {a $50 value}.

You can enter in either (or both) of the 2 ways listed below. Each entry must be notified in the form of a comment on the blog.

  • Visit Hanes Hosiery & check out their tights, then leave a comment telling me what color is your favorite and what you would wear them with.
  • Post about the giveaway on your blog, Facebook, or Twitter (include @uberchiccheap and a link to the giveaway in your tweets) and leave a comment telling me about it.
Make sure to include your first name and a valid email address so I can contact you if you win. The winner will be determined by giving each entry a number and using random.org to select the winning number. (US Residents only.)

The Giveaway ends on Sunday, October 3, at 10 PM (Mountain Standard Time).

Good luck.

Spied: Cream Ruffle Military Jacket

A few weeks ago, I posted a Anthropologie Well Wisher Jacket look for less. When I stumbled on this jacket, I remembered that someone had asked if I could find a similar jacket in cream. Ta-Da! Another little piece of look-for-less magic.

Living Doll Victorian Military Jacket - Dillards - $34.50

It is listed as "winter white" which looks like cream to me. Does anyone know if there is a difference between cream + winter white?

I also noticed that the original Well-Wisher Jacket from Anthropologie dropped to $79.95 (Orig. $148.00).

And in case you wanted to look at the options I posted last time:

Asymmetrical Ruffle Jacket - Wet Seal - $22.50
Ruffled Military Jacket - Kohl's - $49.99 (Orig. $72.00)

What do you think of this option? Do you prefer it in tan, black, or "winter white"? Leave your thoughts below.

Reader Request: Mary Janes w/ Bow

I recently got this request from Rachel of Bytes & Bobbins,
I was wondering if you'd be able to find a cheaper pair of shoes like these Duo Victoria Mary Janes. I love the bow on the top and the chunky heel, but I just can't stomach paying $140 for these babies. Thanks in advance! :) And love your blog BTW.

I found these three options:

1 - Jellypop Dancer Mary Jane Pump - DSW - $39.95 (Orig. $55.00)
2 - Merona® Moreen Oxford-Style Mary Jane Pumps - Target - $24.99
3 - Ribbon-Trim Sueded Cutout Pumps - Newport News - $34.00 (Orig. $44.00)

What do you think of the options? Is this a look you would wear? Leave your thoughts below.

Style File: Katie {Family Photo Shoot Update}

Some of you may remember the styling I did for Katie's family photo shoot in June.

Katie was kind enough to send me a few shots and I am so happy with how they turned out.

Such a cute family. Thanks again for sending these pictures on, Katie!

Inspired: J.Crew {Camel +Camel}

In J.Crew's September catalog there was a 3-picture spread demonstrating that camel is back. They proclaim,
Give a warm welcome to tawny head-to-toe tonal looks. For fall we are declaring light brown the new black.

I was especially taken with the middle trench skirt combo. Here's how I would take on this concept for less:

Mossimo® Black: Volume Back Trench Coat - Cocoa Butter - Target - $27.99 (Orig. $39.99)
Waist Detail Skirt - Chadwicks - $16.99
Vintage Cotton Scoopneck Tee - J.Crew - $25.00 (Orig. $32.50)
Kirra Braid Belt - PacSun - $12.50
Leatherette Oxford Bootie - Forever 21 - $26.80
Twisted Multi-Strand Necklace - Forever 21 - $12.80 {I also really like this option from Charlotte Russe}
total: $122.08

Remember when putting together a monochromatic look, mixing textures will keep your outfit from falling flat.

What do you think of the outfit? Is this something you would wear? How about camel as 'the color' for fall? Leave your thoughts below.

I Could Do That: Anthropologie Free Flow Tank {II}

Do you guys remember my bold attempt at making this Anthropologie Free Flow tank?

{Free Flow Tank - $78}

Several months ago, I tried to make this shirt. I bought 2 shirts (1 XS and 1 XL) of the same color at the DownEast Basics warehouse. I chose a cap sleeve tee with a finished edge for the XS and cut fabric strips out of the XL shirt. I gathered the strips at one side with a straight stitch. Then I sewed the ruffles on to the shirt. As I mentioned, amongst other problems, the ruffles rolled, a lot. So, I finally got around to hemming each ruffle last week. I also made the belt out of 1" grosgrain ribbon.

Here's the final product:

If it appears a bit wrinkly, that's because it is. Whoops. You know how you don't know it's wrinkly until you start photo editing? And it's already dark outside and you can't take another picture? That, my friends, is what happened last night.

Anyway. This is it. Any projects you have been itching to make? Leave your thoughts below.

Inspired: Ann Taylor {Double Breasted + Stripes}

Last week, I got an email from Ann Taylor proclaiming stripes as the must have trend for fall (yes, yes, yes). They also offered this bit of advice,

Stripes add a chic graphic pop and are a wardrobe must-have this season. Play with proportion and layer them on...
The email touted two outfits demonstrating the general chicness of stripes. I, of course, immediately fell in love with this ensemble.

How great is that double breasted sweater jacket? As I was shuffling past the Forever 21 storefront this weekend, I saw a similar jacket. I went in and started hunting for them on the racks. I went back to the display section to find the mannequin wearing my beloved jacket, and of course, it was nowhere to be found. My husband asked me what I was so anxious to find and I kept telling him "they have a double breasted knit blazer somewhere and I have to find it". At this point, I am sure he thought I had lost my mind. When I got home, I hopped on my computer and felt vindicated as I found jacket below on their website. I also found some other goodies to make this outfit work for less:

Casual Knit Blazer - Forever 21 - $29.80
Scoop Neck Striped Top - Forever 21 - $10.90
Flat Front Skinny Pants - Forever 21 - $22.80

Auburn Patent Pump - Payless Shoesource - $22.99
Baby Pearl And Ribbon Necklace - Charlotte Russe - $12.50
